ABOUT THIS SERIES
ICE HOUSES These works are a compositional play between geometric color relationships and layered texturing of controlled chaos set on an icy stage. Treated much like a still-life, warm color notes and placement of each ice house are contrasted against the icy backdrop of white and frosted blues of a winter's stage. Using careful orchestration of textures, shape, and color in each piece, "I try to create an authentic feel to each structure, wanting to capture the character, quirky oddities, and weathered, gritty details that are reflective within each ice hut. This subject matter gives me the opportunity to explore endless color relationships and how they relate to their environment." Using large brushes, palette knifes, and brayers, I build layers of textures and form to achieve each environment.

Inspired by the works of Romare Bearden and the early paintings of David Hockney, Roth fuses these inspirations together, combining painting with mixed media collage. Roth pays homage to the souls that spend much of there lives in the icebound regions of the Alaska, Canada and the frozen tundras of the globe. Each lakeside region has their own way of eclectically constructing their ice-huts on the frozen tundra, reflective of their customs and way of life. The simple, naive architecture varies from lake to lake, each community adopting different details from their frozen culture.
